Art Force 5 Persists to Pittsburgh
The Art Force 5 had a wonderful experience with their pop-up art-build in Buffalo but it failed to attract any interest from other NFL teams or those affiliated with the organization on the national level. The program received kind words of encouragement from various folks within the organization but quite frankly, they are busy running a complicated industry which plans years in advance - so these small art pop-ups do not fit into their big picture.
So without regret or resentment, the Art Force 5 is going to push this tribute onward as an unofficial, unauthorized, grassroots initiative to engage fans in a nationwide tribute to the centennial of the 19th Amendment. Next up is Pittsburgh (9/15) where they will find a way to pay tribute to the unstoppable Nellie Bly. Any Pittsburgh fans that want to welcome a small team of Pittsburgh-born art superheroes into parking lots, tailgate communities, or nearby business patios* please reach out to artforce5@alfred.edu. (*The 5-minute art-making makes a great activity while customers wait for a table at a busy restaurant).
The program celebrates each host city through paying tribute to a female empowerment icon. It is not affiliated with any political movement, church, or for-profit entity and charges no cost to participate.
Pittsburgh native Nellie Bly was a pioneer in investigative reporting, most famously known for faking insanity in order to go undercover into an insane asylum. In her role as reporter, she travel around the world in a record-setting 72 days and was also the first and only female war correspondent of the Great World War (WWI). The Art Force 5 plan to pay tribute to Harriet Tubman in Baltimore, Maryland, Dorothy Dandridge in Cleveland, Ohio and Shirley Chisholm in New York City before assessing other stadiums. The NFL teams of those cities have not endorsed these educational activities.
