Art Force 5 to launch Hornell after-school program

Hornell, NY – Alfred University’s creativity superheroes continue to serve communities by launching a weekly after-school program at the Hornell Community Arts Center. Youth from Hornell and surrounding communities are invited make their own action figure, design a super cape, or attend mini-workshops on developing your own comic book. The Tuesday series will begin on January 22 and run until April 23 with twelve sessions and three break days on February 19, March 12, and April 9.

The Hornell program is modeled after this past summer successful residency on Manhattan’s Governors Island. The program occupied a house on the island’s Colonel’s Row, a former Army / Coast Guard station which is turning into a cultural retreat for NYC residents and tourists. The program has again been invited to return for the summer of 2019. Program director Dan Napolitano hopes that the Hornell program can serve to launch new programs and refine existing programs which strengthen their NYC outreach.

The Hornell series’ January 22 opening will include a free Marvel or DC comic book for all attendees, followed by ten weeks of comic-creating, and a final April 23 closing reception with the unveiling of a comic book created by local youth. The action figure and cape craft stations will be run consistently each week as well as the “Drawn to Diversity” comic book exhibit which had been supported by Marvel Comics.

The program will be open from 3:30pm until 5:30pm and visitors can stay for as long or as little as they prefer. Hornell Community Arts Center is located at 56 Broadway Mall in Hornell. Youth and families are welcome to drop-in but groups of ten or more are asked to rsvp to artforce5@alfred.edu so the team can staff accordingly.
